What could be wrong with my hand held police scanner?

I have a 300 channel dual trunking hand held programmable scanner. I had if for about 5 years and in the past year or so it hasn't been working properly. I can't get good reception, and all I can get is local agencies (such as police fire rescue etc) and when I get the weather frequencies (NOAA Weather) even they come in very poor. I tried changing batteries, antennas, and even using the antenna for my base scanner, and I still get poor reception. I even tried inirializing it (Clearing the whole memory) and I still have problems. I tried my hand held scanner I take to work with me (this is only 10 channels and I use it for work only) and the weather comes in very clear, and other frequencies come in very clear as well. So what could be wrong with the scanner? Did something break inside the unit?

There could be a problem with the antenna connection inside or you could have lost a preamplifier stage in the scanner. There are other possibilities as well. The best thing is to take it into a shop and see what it might cost to have it fixed. Then you can decide if you want to fix it, buy a new scanner, or suffer with the way it is now working. Good luck.
