How can you tell the difference between acid and rosin flux?
Yeah, I just bought some "unknown" solder, and I want to make sure that I'm not using acid flux on my electricals. I know that rosin flux is usually in solder wire. How can i tell?
This may not be an easy task, as the variety of fluxes used in solder wires is great.
Acid fluxes contain more than just acid. They tend to be high in chloride content. They are often used for adhesion to steel and aluminum. If you heat up a spot on a sheet of one of these metals with a torch and then touch the solder to the heated spot and the solder sticks, then it probably has an acid core.
The rosin used in rosin core solders can have a very great difference in composition depending upon type (conventional clean up, water clean up, etc,). It might also contain organic acids to help control the fluxing process. Just cutting open some of the solder and mixing the core with water and testing this for "acid" will not tell you anything.
It is the flux residue and not the initial composition of the flux which causes problems. An ionograph is usually used to detect flux reside. This is beyond any home testing.
