Do automotive hydraulic lifters often fail after, say, 100,000 miles?
Apart from the loss of compression through cylinder and ring wear, and from leaky valves, do failing hydraulic valve lifters often contribute to the decrease in power in an older automobile engine? Of course, if they get 'soggy' the valves do not open or close at optimal times. Is there much point to 'routinely' replacing them after, say, 100,000 miles?
Lifters go bad. its not a matter of how old they are or how many miles. its a moving part. all moving parts in an engine can fail at any time. if they are making noise are taking longer than normal to pump up then replace them. try doind an engine flush and using a lightly thicker first if you like. do not use lucas. alot of people will say just put some lucas in it. Well lucas is so thick it causes oil seals to blow out. it also can gel the oil. relly bad for your engine. just do an engine flush. use a thicker oil. for example if you use a 5w-20 try a 10w-40 and see if it helps. if this fails then have the lifters changed. they go bad all the time. has nothing to do with milage or how old they are. parts ware out and fail at random. its the nature of the beast.
