What happens to dead whales when they wash up on shore?
A friend was trying to tell me the other day that a one time a dead whale was blown up after it died on shore. I found out that this actually did happen. What is done now when a whale dies and washes up on shore?
It is hard to say.. most dead whales that die naturally do not die on land and they sink to the bottom of the ocean and decompose. This provides food for deep see creatures and start the food chain.
Admittedly some whales beach themselves and die on land or potentially wash up on shore.
If no one discovers a beached whale and it dies then it naturally decomposes. the way all flesh and blood decompose.
If humans discover it.. what happens to it depends upon where it is found.. decomposing flesh like a whale can be dangerous (bacteria, smells, fecal matter, etc. ) so.. we would take steps to protect anyone that could potentially come into contact with it. This is probably why the one you mentioned was "blown up" to make it decompose faster.
