Do so-called "Hypermileage" drivers mess up traffic flow and light timing?

I think it's great if you want to get better mileage out of your vehicle but there is a group playing a game with it called "Hypermileage". By taking off very slowly, driving 5-10 mph below speed limits, leaving long distances between other drivers, shutting off their engines past the 10 second idle point (on ABC News story) and making very slow stops these game players are wreaking havoc with the manual timing of lights and traffic flow/turn sensors that time lights.

Well actually it may help - provided the "hypermiler" is aware and knows the routes. For example in our downtown the lights are all timed to about 15mph, though the official speed limit is 25mph.

So if you just sorta creep along - you never have to stop at all! I do this a lot and it's fun to cruise by the "jackrabbit" start-stop guy who's just convinced he's "working it" and getting ahead... and then completely dumbfounded when I go rolling past him perfectly timed with the light!

What I despise - taking the Zen approach to driving - is when I'm rolling up on a red light and the guy behind me is so freaked he has to race around me and slam his breaks to stop... then the light turns green... and there I am...

Some people can't seem to drive ahead and realize that they're not really going to get anywhere... even on the freeway some drivers seem oblivious to the fact that the car in front of them is going slow because there are 8MILLION OTHER CARS in front of them.

Go figure.

Now all that said - it does depend what type of road your on-- a single lane with someone going 5-10 under? Dang - that's like being stuck behind a motor home! No that's not cool.

As for the manual timers on lights - I thought they were becoming more rare? All of ours are either timed or pedestrian/cyclist triggered. The left turn lights are sensored though. Yeah slow stops could have an impact there.

There shouldn't be anything wrong with shutting off the engine if they can anticipate the green... no worse than trying to put a manual transmission in gear.

Totally... do this in the fast food drive up line!!! But watch out for people that can't stand to have more than half a car length between you and the car in front of you! Some people are just jerks.

Hey and dig this - if everyone - and I mean everyone - obeyed the basic rules of the freeway including courtesy like following distance, speed, merging, etc... they are designed such that we'd NEVER have a traffic jam.

It's rude behavior, following too close (causing harder stops) and constant lane changing that actually create the worst jams!
