Phone wiring and DSL performance?

My new DSL is only running intermittently (at best); keeps disconnecting from websites, etc. The provider seems to think it's one of the phone filters, but the problem persists when everything is disconnected.

So, I checked the phone line with an analog Line Tester (one with a three-led indicator): it says "Line Reversed." What exactly does this mean, and could this be causing my problem?
Thank you both for responding. yes, it's an older house--I think running a new line for the DSL/computer may be the best fix. Thanks again!

line reversed just means the polarity is reversed, tip is where ring should be, and ring is where tip should be... this makes no difference with modern telephones and equipment, and should have absolutely no effect on your DSL performance...

if you have wifi and a 2.4 Ghz phone this might be the cause of your problem... change the channel that the router operates on...

if your inside wiring is older, this might be the cause of your problem.. the best configuration for DSL is to have a separate wire run from the NID to the DSL modem... you can install a whole house filter at this location, so that you do not need filters on all of your devices and phones...

if you have an alarm system this is highly likely to be the problem, as alarms are wired to seize the phone line, so it is unlikely that the alarm system is filtered... the alarm system should be filtered, and a line should be run directly from the main telephone box (NID) to the DSL modem, as once you filter the alarm, you will effectively be filtering the DSL signal from being able to get to the modem...

the distance from the CO could be an issue especially in rural areas... or the modem might be losing sync.. if you have checked the above and still feel that the issue is with the provider, then have them send someone out to test and/or repair your DSL....
