What Pocket Knife should I buy?
I'm looking to buy a pocket knife for utility purposes, like cutting open packages, letters, etc. I would like a knife that is partially serrated and partially straight edge, and is around 3.5 inches to 4 inches. Price range would be around $15-$30. I would like a knife that is very durable, holds a good edge, and can be sharpened easily and can last for a long time. 10 points to the person who gives me the best suggestion for a good pocket knife that fits my description. Thanks!
The knife that you describe doesn't exist, at least not in the pricerange of 15-30
I've been collecting knives over 12 years now and one of the criterias for my knives is high edge holding, at least for the light cutters. I got quite a few knives in very exotic, high alloy, high Performance Tool steels and even though a lot of those steels are designed to cut other steels it's amazing how quickly cardboard dulls them... Although, they are still a a lot better edge holders than conventional steel knives.
Although, I guess it depends what do you call "holds a good edge"...
Most of the knives in the budget you describe will loose shaving sharp edge after ~50 inches of cardboard or so instead of 500 or more. As usual they use 420 Stainless Steel or 440A at best.
420 - http://zknives.com/knives/steels/steelgraph.shtml?nm=420
440A - http://zknives.com/knives/steels/steelgraph.shtml?nm=440A
You'd have to maintain(as in strop and sharpen) them quite frequently.
Still, from those knives CRKT would be a good choice.
Slightly more expensive Kershaws will yield much better results.
