I need to drill holes into a brick wall exactly at right angles.?

Is there any way other than using skill that will enable me to drill as series of holes into a vertical brick wall so that I can insert rods that end up at right angles to the surface of the brickwork.

Here is a simple jig that ensures perfectly right angles on any reasonably flat surface:

http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=2406

On brick, it will help if you also lay a piece of plywood over the brick. This will help "average out" the irregularities in the wall. The jig is designed for use with Forstner Bits, all of which have a 3/8" shank. If your Drill Bit is slightly larger, you may be able to modify the jig by drilling through the existing hole, providing there is enough material. Another option is to drill a 3/8" pilot hole first, then follow up with a larger bit. There may also be similar jigs that could work if your bit is very large.

If you have access to a Drill Press, which naturally drills perfectly plumb holes, you can make your own jig. Just find a piece of 2x4, drill a hole with the bit you'll be using, then use the 2x4 to guide your masonry holes.

If neither of these options will work, try to get ahold of a drill with an onboard level. Use a square to eyeball the angle from above, and the bubble will take care of the other axis. Take it slow, the beginning is the most important part. If the hole is started accurately, the bit will jig itself square throughout the rest of the cut.

Hope this helps and happy woodworking!
