The metric system is a necessary tool for scientists because it allows them to measure things, all sorts of things, such as distance (metres), mass (kilograms), volume (litres), and temperature (Celsius), to name but a few. Also, there are many units used by scientists that are derived from these base units, such as newtons, pascals, joules, and watts. Since science is all about discovering the secrets of the natural world and because discovering these secrets involves taking careful measurements and then analyzing the data, the metric system is a necessary tool for scientists.
Having stated that, scientists could use non-metric units to measure things, however, the metric system is based upon multiples of ten, which makes calculations so much easier. Also, there is a logical connection between units, for example, a litre is the volume that is occupied by a cubic decimetre and the mass of this volume of water, at a temperature of 4C, is exactly one kilogram. Such logic is missing from non-metric units, which are commonly used in the United States.
Therefore, when using non-metric units a table of seemingly bizarre conversion factors is required to do most calculations. Thus, the metric system offers advantages over non-metric units because they are simple to use and less prone to mistakes due to incorrect conversions from one unit to another. Also, the metric system is used by scientists in every country in the world and so these scientists can collaborate easily because they are all using the same, internationally accepted, units.
Scientists use the metric system in many different ways. For example, a chemist would use the metric system to make standard solutions, a biologists would use the metric system to measure the size of objects viewed under a microscope, and a geologist would use the metric system to measure the density of rocks and minerals.
