wood sculpture question?

where do i start.. what tools do i get? is there a wood sculpture 'bible'?
do i need clamps to Hold Down the wood.
i want to start off small but is it easier to go big so room for error and all that..
thanks in advance...

If you have had no previous experience in carving anything, I would suggest that maybe you try your hand at carving plaster of paris. Get a paper milk carton to use as a form to pour yourself a block.Tearing away the paper once the plaster sets.. Plaster is quite inexpensive. and can be purchased in a variety of amounts. It differs from wood in that wood has a grain to contend with, but my suggestion is meant to get you some quick experience in subtractive sculpture before tackling wood. Plaster can be carved with an inexpensive preferably locking blade Pocket Knife. Even when dull and the plaster will definitely make it dull but still usable for plaster.. Tools for carving wood can range from a whittling knife for small things, dremels for small work pnuematic for larger, files, rasps, riffles, to Wood Carving hand chisels, hand saws, electric chainsaws, Sand Paper emery paper, paper finger nail boards or whatever implement that one might find useful. For instance people would burn out logs to start the carving of dug-out canoes before using an adzes or adzes like tool to finish. Clamps can be used when needed, wooden braces to fit the need of the moment can be built from scrap lumber..To get involved with larger work an investment will have to be made in tools. There are sites that sell them
Here is a link to a site, although it isn't what I would chose to carve it will give you more information than I can here. He suggest basswood which is a very good wood to carve. Different woods will have different characteristic, good and bad for carving. Learn which is which.

And there are many more sites.
I would also suggest looking at the work of other carvers to see what can be done. The carving that I have done and have a preference in doing is in a more abstracted style after having learned to carve realistically using plaster.blocks. I found the work of the British sculptor Henry Moore.to be inspiring. Some of his work being large wooden pieces all of his work being based upon his same sense of form. Be careful ,work safely, but know that you will get cut.it comes with the territory. Be careful token and carving and don't get carried away. Good luck and most of all enjoy yourself. Artwork is work, but should be an enjoyable work.
